Christmas hasn’t always been so glamorous and celebratory. At the beginning of the 19th century, businesses didn’t even consider it a holiday. However, by the end of the century it had become the biggest annual celebration and took on the form that we recognise today. The transformation happened quickly, and came from all sectors of society. Many believe Queen Victoria should be thanked for this.
German-born Prince Albert, who Queen Victoria married, introduced some of the most prominent aspects of Christmas. In 1848 the Illustrated London News published a drawing of the royal family celebrating around a decorated Christmas tree. This soon become as much of a childhood tradition for Prince Albert, as it did for families in Britain who started decorating their trees bedecked with candles, sweets, fruit, homemade decorations and small gifts. Christmas for Victorians began to become more of an important and celebrated time of the year than it had ever done before.
In 1843 Henry Cole, an English civil servant and inventor from Somerset, commissioned an artist to design a card for Christmas. The illustration showed a group of people around a dinner table and a Christmas message, but at one shilling each, they were too pricey for ordinary Victorians. The sentiment however caught on and many children including Queen Victoria’s were encouraged to make their own Christmas cards. Some years later, coloured printing had become more advanced and the price of card production dropped significantly. With that and the introduction of the half penny postage rate, the Christmas card industry took off and by the 1880s the sending of cards had become hugely popular. The commercialisation of Christmas was well on its way.
The commercial Christmas tradition began by Victorians in 1848 when a British confectioner called Tom Smith invented a bold new way to sell sweets. Inspired by a trip to Paris where he saw bon bons and sugared almonds wrapped in twists of paper, he came up with the idea of the Christmas cracker, and by the late Victorian period the sweets were replaced by small gifts and paper hats. The cracker wasn’t the only change to tradition. Gift giving had always been at New Year but moved as Christmas became more important to the Victorians. Initially gifts were rather modest consisting of fruit, nuts, sweets and small handmade trinkets which were hung on the Christmas tree, but as gift giving became more central to the festival, and the gifts became bigger and shop-bought, they moved under the tree. The Victorians also changed the Christmas dinner to how we know it today. The feast originated before the Middle Ages but changed shape throughout the Victorian era. Early Victorian recipes show mince pies were initially made from meat, a tradition dating back to Tudor times. The roast turkey has its beginnings in Victorian Britain too. Previously other forms of roasted meat such as beef and goose were the centrepiece of the Christmas dinner. The turkey was added to this by the more wealthy sections of the community in the 19th century, but its perfect size for a middle class family gathering meant it became the dominant dish by the beginning of the 20th century. Carols were also not new to the Victorians, but it was a tradition that they actively revived. The first significant collection of carols was published in 1833.
Today we hold on to many Victorian Christmas traditions. It was in fact the Victorians after all who transformed the idea of Christmas to be centered around the family. And while Charles Dickens did not invent the Victorian Christmas, his book titled A Christmas Carol helped to popularise and spread the traditions of the festival. Its themes of family, charity, goodwill, peace and happiness encapsulate the spirit of the Victorian Christmas, and are very much a part of the Christmas we celebrate today.

Fireworks night can be terrifying for many dogs, but did you know that teaching dogs to cope with noise fears in advance can help lessen the stress they experience when they hear the unexpected whizz, pop and bang of fireworks? To avoid the fear and anguish many dogs will go through during fireworks displays, it’s so important that owners plan ahead to help them and their dogs feel prepared and comfortable when 5th November comes around. Gradually teaching your dog that noises are not scary will help them be able to cope with unexpected noises over time. This usually involves playing recorded versions of the scary noises, but starting at such a low volume that your dog is not worried by them. The volume and direction of sounds are changed over time, but so slowly that your dog does not show any signs of fear. The sounds should also be associated with something that they enjoy, such as their favourite treats or a game. Dogs who are very frightened already may require support from a qualified, experienced behaviourist. Old, sick, frightened…each cat that arrives in our care is different and we are committed to giving each and every one, the love and care they need for as long as it takes to find them a loving home.
Every cat that comes into us is health checked, treated for fleas and worms and vaccinated and neutered to get them ready for rehoming. We also microchip every cat, so that if they do become separated from their new owner the pair can be quickly reunited.
This dedication ensures the best possible start in their new life. However, such a high level of care comes at a high cost. From the moment a cat comes into our care, to the happy day they leave with their new family, we will do all we can to ensure the best start in their new home.

There are different levels of care accommodation to suit different stages in life and levels of care required. Below, there is a definition and explanation for the types of care home that you may wish to consider. When thinking of the future, a “dual registered” home may be a favourable option for those with assessed “residential” needs.
Dual registered homes provide residential and nursing care. Thus the home will be able to continue to care for the resident in the event that their health or well-being deteriorates to a stage where nursing care is needed. Of course, this is only one consideration among many. We hope this list will help you to find the home that is right for you.
Residential or Nursing Care?
Residential Homes for adults provide full board and personal care to people with disabilities and older people; services include assistance with daily living, such as washing, bathing, dressing, toilet needs and eating.
Nursing Homes provide the same range of services as residential homes but also, they provide care needing the constant involvement of, or supervision by, a qualified nurse, and these homes must be managed by a registered nurse or doctor.
Short term, or respite care, designed to give carers a break, is available in both residential and nursing homes.
All homes have been registered by a government agency.
Choosing a residential or nursing home
Our advice is to always visit the home you are considering moving into. Ask to look around the home, including the bedrooms, bathrooms and other facilities. If you are unable to do this, ask a relative or friend to do it for you. When doing so, it may be useful to go through the following check-list:
• Does the home meet your standards of cleanliness and comfort?
• Does the home smell clean and fresh?
• Ask about staffing levels, both day and night.
• What qualifications do the staff have?
• Do the staff seem friendly?
• Ask other people who stay there what they think of the home and the staff.
• Ask to see a sample menu and a list of activities that people can do there.• Ask a member of staff if you will be allowed to bring some personal items into the home, such as photographs, clocks and small pieces of furniture.• Is the décor adequate?
• Can you have a choice of a single or shared room?• Are there smoking/non-smoking areas?• Can you drink alcohol if you want to?• Is there a lift/stair-lift?• Are there en-suite toilet or washing facilities in the bedrooms?

Choosing the correct home for you or your relative is a very important process and you should ensure that all your needs and expectations are met before deciding upon making your move to one. Once a move has been agreed a nursing home or residential home can really help an older person who is struggling with certain tasks and could do with the help, many people also find they enjoy the social interaction at the home and the added security they have.

For too long, the only way many people could access the additional care and support they needed as they grew older was to sell the family home and dip into their equity to pay for it – and the main option provided was in a care home setting.
Thankfully, forward thinking providers are looking at how they can tailor their services so that there’s a real choice for people in later life that adapts and responds to the wants and needs of the individual – people no longer have to be shoe-horned into what’s available which in the past has often been a care home.

Anna and John decided to make the move from London to Leeds to be closer to their daughter Sue after John suffered a small stroke and then fell on the stairs at home.
